Unsung Heroes Award ceremony in Cape Town Join the Free Market Foundation in the Mother City on the 18th of September as we celebrate the latest recipients of the Gail Day Unsung Heroes Award.
The award is named after long-time administrator and champion of freedom, Gail Day, who retired from the FMF in February of this year.
The FMF wishes to recognise how civil society and private enterprise can mitigate the impact of state failure.
In this spirit, the FMF is delighted to jointly award the Unsung Heroes Award to Dan Southwood-Wells and Herman Maritz, the co-founders of EskomSePush, an app which needs no introduction to South Africans.
The FMF regards ESP as a perfect example of how entrepreneurs can harness the power of technology to solve social and economic problems.

About the award
Established in 2021, the Unsung Heroes Award is bestowed upon those who have made notable contributions to the cause of individual liberty and limited government in South Africa and abroad with little or no acknowledgement. Whether these unsung heroes are conscious of the service they are rendering to the cause of liberty, or whether it is a necessary by-product of their work, is no factor.
The Award is named after Gail Day – Executive Manager at the FMF – who retired in February 2023 after being involved with the FMF since 1987. In recognition of Day’s tireless dedication to managing the administrative machinery of the Foundation (mostly behind the scenes), the FMF named the Gail Day Unsung Heroes Award in her honour.
The award’s logo is that of a cyclist pedalling uphill. This not only recognises Day’s passion for cycling all across the world, but also her relentless hard work advancing the cause of personal freedom, private property, and limited government.
