Will South Africa crash and burn?

International launch of

Economic Freedom of the World – 2017 Annual Report

The launch of the South African edition

In 2000, South Africa ranked 42nd in the Economic Freedom of the World index

By 2016, we had plummeted to 105 out of 159 countries

By comparison, Bulgaria in 2000 ranked 108th

By 2016, it ranked 45th

Does it matter where we rank? YES

A country’s ranking is directly related to a country’s economic well-being

South Africa’s GDP per capita grew by 113% since 2000; Bulgaria’s by 388%

Background
Neil Emerick is the director and founder of NightsBridge - a software company operating in the tourism industry.

In 2003, Emerick developed a software tool that allowed users to explore the Economic Freedom of the World data, correlating it with the World Bank Development Indicators. This tool is released each year with the paper-version of the report.
