The South African economy has been through a difficult time. Since 2009 (the “Z-years”), South Africa’s economy has been slipping into oblivion — driven by weak and unsure political leadership. We have all felt the impact of a deteriorating economy, heard about being junk status, and seen the dismal forecasts. Growth is structurally low, unemployment is at an all-time high, confidence is at a historic low, and government finances are on the edge of collapse. Whoever will be responsible for the next budget, will face a considerable task of restoring the health of the fiscus. Unfortunately, this plan will include increased taxes and many more new taxes. Nevertheless, the worst seems to be behind us. The new "number one" might not make all the difference, but the momentum of good sentiment might just spark a turn towards a better tomorrow.
