About Yuri Maltsev

Before defecting to the United States in 1989, Dr Maltsev was a member of a senior Soviet economics team that worked on President Gorbachev's reforms package of perestroika.

He is renowned as one of the few economists in the West with direct first-hand knowledge of the inner workings of the Soviet economy and Soviet government policies.

He is one of a very few to have briefed senior leaders on both sides during the last stages of the Cold War.

Dr Yuri Maltsev holds an MA in History of Economic Thought from Moscow State University and a PhD in Labour Economics from the Institute for Labour Research of the USSR State Committee on Labour and Social Affairs.
