Expanding the mandate to a fool’s errand
Dr Richard J Grant

The ANC’s party chair, Gwede Mantashe, was recently quoted as saying that “The mandate of the Reserve Bank has to be expanded to meet the needs of the economy.” Although there is no firm proposal as to how the mandate should be expanded, it is commonly asserted that the Bank should shift its policy toward stimulating economic growth and employment.

FAREWELL to an UNSUNG HERO...

Last week Tuesday, we bid a heartfelt farewell to Gail Day, whose has devoted a lifetime of hard work and energy to the cause of the FMF. It is no exaggeration to say that without her extraordinary efforts – often behind the scenes and away from the limelight – the FMF would not be in the position that it is today. We will miss Gail greatly but will be with her in spirit as she embarks on her exciting retirement journey ahead.

FMF AWARD NAME CHANGE

In recognition of her tireless contribution over several decades, the Executive Committee has resolved to change the name of the Free Market Foundation Award in Gail’s honour. The name of the award will henceforth be known as The Gail Day Unsung Heroes Award

This award will be granted to those unsung heroes of freedom (like Gail herself), whose work contributes to the expansion of individual liberty in Africa – but whose efforts may have been overlooked.
