EQUATING black with evil is racist, according to one of our most irreverent anti-apartheid reverends, Allan Boesak. If so, our minister for health and against freedom, Aaron Motsoaledi, is racist. He wants "plain packaging" for cigarettes. "Plain", in nicotine-Nazi language, is the opposite of plain in plain English. It is maximally striking, graphic and scary, the way a horror movie or gory software game might be depicted.
Ask someone what they understand by "plain packaging" and they might suggest brown paper. What nico-Nazis want is the Orwellian opposite, a conspicuous black box, with visceral images of rotting body parts and terrifying warnings.
